How to set TikTok Shop commission rates by category

How to think about commission rates across categories.

Written by Michael Tona

There is no single right commission rate. What works depends on your margin and what other brands in your category offer. Here is how to set a rate that recruits creators without eroding profit.

Quick answer

Set your TikTok Shop commission by working from two numbers: your margin after product cost, TikTok fees, and samples, and the going rate creators expect in your category. Categories with higher margins (like beauty and supplements) can support higher commissions and often need to, because competition for creators is fierce. Lower-margin categories run leaner rates. Benchmark what similar brands offer, then use targeted commissions to go higher for the specific creators worth it.

Start from your margin

Before you look at anyone else, know what you can afford. Take your selling price, subtract product cost, TikTok's referral and transaction fees, and your sample spend. What is left is the room you have for commission and profit. A commission that ignores this can make a program that looks busy but loses money on every order.

Then benchmark your category

Creators choose products partly on commission, so your rate has to be competitive against other brands in your niche. Beauty, skincare, and supplements tend to run higher commissions because margins allow it and demand for creators is high. Lower-margin categories such as some home or electronics products run tighter. Look at what comparable brands offer and set your open rate in that band.

Use targeted rates for the creators worth it

Your open rate fills the program. For the handful of creators driving real GMV in your category, a higher targeted commission is usually worth it, because their sales far outweigh the extra points. Set a competitive baseline, then pay up selectively for proven performers.

Seeing which rates actually pay back

The only way to know if a category rate is working is to tie it to sales. Hubfluence's GMV and affiliate reporting shows what each creator drives against the commission you set, so you can see which rates earn their keep and adjust by category from real data instead of guessing.
